Pulmuone has launched the construction of an advanced aquaculture base to produce gim, which has emerged as a leading export product, on land. The initiative aims to overcome the limitations of offshore aquaculture caused by climate change and enable stable, year-round production.

Pulmuone announced on the 9th that it has broken ground for the nation’s first “Gim Land-based Aquaculture Research and Development (R&D) Center” in the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex in Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province. The center is linked to the national project “Development of Sustainable High-quality Gim Seed Production and Land-based Aquaculture Technology,” selected by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in May last year.

The land-based gim aquaculture promoted by Pulmuone is a technology that creates an indoor environment similar to the ocean to produce gim. It enables harvesting of raw gim with uniform quality regardless of weather or season and is regarded as an alternative to overcome the limitations of offshore aquaculture.

The R&D center to be built in Saemangeum will be developed on a total site area of 9,473㎡ as an integrated infrastructure combining aquaculture, research, and seawater pre-treatment facilities. In the first phase, Pulmuone will establish core infrastructure such as the land-based gim aquaculture building and seawater treatment facilities. Based on validation results, it will pursue a second-phase expansion that adds a processing building and an R&D building. The core land-based gim aquaculture building will introduce the nation’s largest “bioreactor system.” The bioreactor is a system that precisely controls environmental conditions for gim growth, such as temperature, light, and nutrients. Pulmuone plans to complete a “one-stop industrialization system” that connects all processes from production to processing and distribution and to launch land-based gim products on the market in 2027.
