Chong Kun Dang is introducing an artificial intelligence (AI) control system at its Cheonan plant in Chungnam, marking the first such implementation in the domestic pharmaceutical industry.

Chong Kun Dang announced on the 19th that it held the '2025 Autonomous Factory Establishment Project Launch Ceremony' at its Cheonan plant in Chungnam on the 18th. The event was attended by Vice Minister Noh Yong-seok of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS), Director Ahn Kwang-hyun of the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Promotion Group, and representatives from 20 companies. Discussions on the AI autonomous factory implementation plan, a tour of the Cheonan plant, and a meeting were conducted.

This launch ceremony was part of the autonomous factory establishment project organized by the MSS. Chong Kun Dang plans to enhance quality competitiveness by building an autonomous factory where workers and AI collaborate through real-time control, analysis, and prediction based on AI digital twin technology. To achieve this, the company aims to strengthen employees' digital capabilities and introduce new technologies, establishing an intelligent autonomous operation system based on AI, digital twins, and Multi-Modal Large Language Models (MLLM).

In particular, the AI control system to be established through this project will apply MLLM, which can simultaneously understand and infer various types of data such as images and videos. By integrating previously dispersed control systems into one, the company aims to reduce human errors and prevent equipment downtime and quality issues in advance. Additionally, an automated alarm analysis system will assist operators in decision-making, alleviating work burdens and maintaining consistent quality even in shift work environments. The factory's operational efficiency is also expected to improve by reducing waste of energy and resources.

Kim Young-joo, CEO of Chong Kun Dang, stated, "The autonomous factory can be seen as a core strategy for Chong Kun Dang's sustainable growth in the global market, beyond simple process innovation," adding, "We will collaborate with AI to enhance quality and increase production efficiency to secure global competitiveness."
