Konyang University Hospital announced on the 17th that Professor Kim Kwang-kyun's orthopedic team successfully performed hip joint replacement surgery on a super-aged female patient aged 108 (106 according to the resident registration). The patient had recently suffered a hip fracture due to a fall, experiencing severe pain and walking difficulties. However, it was reported that both the family and the patient hesitated about the surgery due to her advanced age.

Elderly hip fracture patients often have comorbidities such as hypertension, heart failure, angina, chronic renal failure, diabetes, osteoporosis, chronic lung disease, and depression, leading to reluctance for surgery. Delaying surgery can significantly increase the risk of complications such as pneumonia, pressure sores, thrombosis, urinary tract infections, sepsis, and delirium.

In response, Konyang University Hospital activated a multidisciplinary consultation system involving the departments of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Cardiology, and Pulmonology to thoroughly assess the patient's health status and establish a precise surgical plan. The surgery was safely conducted on the second day after the fall, on the 9th. The patient is currently recovering without complications and is gradually regaining walking ability through rehabilitation therapy.

Professor Kim stated, “Surgery on elderly patients carries risks, but through a systematic consultation system and prompt early surgery, we can offer new hope for life to patients,” adding, “We will provide patient-tailored medical services using extensive clinical experience, specialized medical staff, and the latest robotic joint replacement surgical equipment.”

In 2013, Professor Kim also garnered attention for successfully performing hip joint replacement surgery on a 100-year-old grandmother who suffered a hip fracture.
