Distribution Strategies

A: I called this meeting to discuss the recent crisis of ourcompany. I’m pretty sure you all have heard by now. Anything to say about that? Any suggestions?
B: I must say that I was very surprised to actually experience the area where our promotion has no control over. I still have no idea where the rumors came from and how they spread so fast.
A: I agree. It’s called word of mouth. It’s actually one of the most powerful forms of promotion that we as companies don’t have direct control over. What I don’t understand is, I thought we have been preparing for this kind of crisis. I don’t know what went wrong. Can anyone tell me what kinds of efforts we made to create positive word of mouth?
B: We encouraged good word of mouth by strong customer service, hiring people to promote particular products, and create a buzz within their peer networks and even reward customers with discounts for referrals to their friends.
A: Exactly. What more could we have done?
B: I think we could have done nothing more. I guess this is why we say it is not controllable.
A: I guess so. Here’s what I want all of you to do by the end of this month. There are a couple of books regarding WOM, so read any of one of them and please write me a book report. The books are: “the tipping point” by Malcom Gladwell, and “How little things can make a big difference” by Little Brown and Company.

I called this meeting to…: 회의를 주도했을 때 “(…
I have no idea…: I don’t know와 의미는 같으나 훨씬 강한 어조로 흔히 감정을 실어 표현한다.
- I have no idea how I should behave at the moment.
word of mouth: 구전, 입소문
- News of their success spread by word of mouth.
- What’s the latest buzz from Hollywood?
to make a (big) difference:
- Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference.

CEO ENGLISH
In terms of risks, Chairman you have referred to issues of resource nationalism and higher taxes in some jurisdictions. There are also major cost pressures bearing upon a number of our key inputs which we have, to date, been largely successful in containing. Although there are also clearly concerns in the world economy arising from trade imbalances, the scale of the US deficit and the inflationary pressures which may result from higher energy prices, the overall outlook remains encouraging, with leading indicators signaling continuing strong global growth and robust underlying demand. If prices and demand continue at, or near, current levels the Group can expect another strong year.

Bear upon(on)은 우리말로 “… 따라서 “그 정보가 이 사건과 직접적인 연관이 있을지 모릅니다”는 말을 “The information may bear on this case.”

내년 경제 전망을 전문가에게 물을 때는 “What is your outlook on our economy next year?”

“남성이 여성보다 좀더 건강하다”는 “Men are more robust than women”, 누군가 강력히 표명한 의견은 robust opinion이라고 한다. 위 본문 중 “… strong global growth and robust underlying demand …”
